As a Fairtrade Designated Workplace, Manitoba Liquor Mart is committed to supporting Fairtrade initiatives.

In celebration of National Fairtrade month in October, we will help raise awareness of Fairtrade by sampling a Fairtrade certified wine at select locations from October 13-15 and October 27-29.

Visit a sampling station at a Liquor Mart and discover a new favourite!

Why Fairtrade Wine?

  • Growing wine (grapes) is a challenging business: it often relies on seasonal work for harvesting grapes, and specialized equipment to produce wine.
  • Workers and small-scale wine growers located in the global south often fall short of earning a stable living from wine production.
    • In particular a number of the  “New World Wines” produced in South Africa, Argentina and Chile face a host of economic, social and political challenges making it difficult for the wineries to compete on the international market.
  • Back in 2003, Fairtrade International began working with small producers in these countries, providing Fairtrade minimum prices to farmers that sell their wine to a trader on fair terms. The Fairtrade minimum price:
    • Covers the average cost of sustainable wine production or the market price, whichever is higher.
    • Protects farmers against sudden price shifts and enables producers to plan beyond the next planting and harvesting cycle.
  • Like other Fairtrade products (coffee tea etc.), Fairtrade certification means:
    • The wine was produced in a fair and humane way and meets the Internationally recognized Fairtrade standards.
    • Farmers and harvesters are treated with respect, paid a decent wage, and the grapes are cultivated in an environmentally sustainable manner.

What is Fairtrade?

  • An independent, third party certification system for goods that are produced in the Global South.
  • Its mission is to ensure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade and to support local sustainability for farmers and workers.
  • Products that meet the environmental and social criteria associated with Fairtrade certification place the blue and green Fairtrade mark on their products so consumers know it is a sustainable product.
