This is followed by a wave of brine infused with smooth buttermilk, ripe bananas and currants. Smoke gradually wells up on the palate bringing a mouthful of warm creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. As the taste lengthens and deepens, dry espresso, liquorice root and tarry smoke develop coating the palate with chewy peat oils.

    This release of the new Ardbeg Drum is a non-age statement Scotch whisky that, after initially being aged in ex-bourbon barrels, is then finished for “ awhile” in ex-rum casks sourced from somewhere in the Americas.The nose emits fragrant pine resin and woodsmoke, alongside ripe banana and pineapple giveway to smoked apples and cocoa powder, finishing with distant ginger, cinnamonand floating notes of lavender. Waves of smoke and tar cascade into a dry peppery mouthfeel. Clove, licorice and ginger strut towards rich notes of dark chocolate and smoked vanilla. Intense smoke, roasted coffee liqueur and a treasure trove of sweet spicescome together in a complex crescendo.

If a touch of water is added then the flavours increase with the addition of a sweet ripe fruit start followed by the tang of peat.
